Grief In Exile (Mariee Siou Cover)

about

This song is originally by Mariee Sioux and spoke strongly to me after the passing of a few close friends, Bradley Bailey and Opal Latham, during the pandemic. After seeing her Mariee in Los Angeles on August 28, 2021, two months after Bradley's passing and my first show since the pandemic began, I felt inspired to cover this song over the following couple days as part of an upcoming collection of cover songs called Various Praises. Thank you Mariee for the beautiful music. I have loved listening to her music since I first heard it in 2008, so it's very special to connect with it through my own interpretation. You can listen to her version on the highly recommended album of the same name at marieesioux.bandcamp.com/album/grief-in-exile

lyrics

On a hallowed wind
The song of a missing twin
I could have sworn that he'd be dead (laid to rest)
In a sweet grass and cedar bed (dressed in his best)
A child of God an ancient seed smile (all the while)
A Grief in exile
A Grief in exile
Oh grief in exile
Hold on tight and like a child
You won't miss a beat you'll just skip stones
A lioness and a coward
My power prowess and prayer
My truth feeding in the lair
Bloody paws mane of flowers
Our powers out magic theirs
Our truth feeding in the lair
So gather the necessities
For a ceremony, Oh life!
Only take what you need
And learn to give thanks for your time
Abalone shells sage and cedar
Tend to the coals that feed
Imaginations of ether
Beat with the arteries
That burn with a humble fever
Tend to the ones in need
Of an honorable griever
Bend with the corn and weed
Out the creeping deceiver
All the while
Grief in exile
Hold on tight and like a child
You won't miss a beat you'll just skip stones
A lioness and a coward
My power prowess and prayer
My truth feeding in the lair
Bloody paws mane of flowers
Our powers out magic theirs
Our truth feeding in the lair
So gather the necessities
For a ceremony, Oh life!
Only take what you need
And learn to give thanks for your time
Abalone shells sage and cedar
Tend to the coals that feed
Imaginations of ether
Beat with the arteries
That burn with a humble fever
Tend to the ones in need
Of an honorable griever
Bend with the corn and weed
Out the creeping deceiver
